Whether you are visiting the Big Island to sightsee or relax, one highlight
not to be missed is seeing Kona coffee trees in bloom. Early in the year
you are likely to see the fragrant flowers blooming, known as "Kona
Snow". Later in the year you can catch site of the beans being harvested.
In November the Kona Coffee Festival is also a great way to get insight
into one of Kona's oldest traditions - Growing Kona Coffee.
There are many guided tours for groups, but if you prefer something a
little off the beaten trail it is nice just to take a drive on the old
Mamalahoa Hwy which is known as the Kona coffee belt. Mamalahoa Hwy is
the 11-mile stretch of road that trails above Kona on the majestic mountain
of Hualalai. This road is the Hawaii of old that many visitors like to
see. It is God's country up here with beautiful coffee trees everywhere,
and livestock and old coffee shacks that have been around for generations
and will be for many more!
When visiting the Big Island it is nice to see the many splendors the
ocean has to offer, or see the active volcano, but seeing Kona coffee
growing really takes you back to a special piece of Hawaii's history.
Kona Coffee is sold in many places, but to make sure you are getting fresh, high-quality,
